LiFiD: A Near-Eye Light Field Display

Features

LiFiD is a wearable AR/MR display that provides unprecedented viewing experiences for users. It offers continuous focus and allows the user to navigate any part of the augmented content with a natural visual effect. Unlike existing devices such as Magic Leap One, Hololens 2, or Google Glass that simply display stereo images, LiFiD faithfully reproduces the incident light field to our eyes without the need of eye tracking, moving mechanical part, or time multiplexing. LiFiD is free of the vergence accommodation conflict problem that plagues most AR/MR glasses in the market and causes discomfort or eye strain. The reproduced light field by LiFiD supports infinitely many (continuous) focal planes so that a virtual object can be rendered at any desired depth. In comparison, most existing devices support only one or two focal planes. With its exquisitely designed optic system, LiFiD provides high spatial resolution, high image quality, and wide field of view.

Augmented/Mixed Reality

Setup

  • A camera is placed in front of LiFiD to capture the image displayed by LiFiD

  • Change camera focus, take pictures, and then check the pictures taken with different focus

  • The zoom effect is caused by the camera, a user does not experience such zoom when wearing LiFiD

  • The display content of LiFiD remains constant
